Off-grid inverters – system managers for a self-sufficient energy supply

Together with the battery unit, the Sunny Island off-grid inverter forms a standard AC grid into which all components, both electricity consumers and generators, can be integrated. With this AC coupling and Sunny Island as its system manager, SMA has developed the technological solution for the energy supply of remote areas away from the grid or for emergency power supply in the event of unstable grids.

For the first time, PV systems, ANTARIS wind turbines, diesel generators, hydroelectric or combined heat and power plants can now be coupled on the AC voltage side in the same way as normal 230 V consumers. This eliminates the need for complex DC cabling and provides maximum flexibility. This makes it possible to adapt such an island grid to increasing demand quickly and without major technical effort. With this technology developed by SMA and BRAUN Wind Turbines , it is possible to supply a large part of the 1.6 billion people who still have to get by without electricity with electrical energy.

The ANTARIS wind turbines as an energy supplier for stand-alone systems or energy containers!

The AC coupling concept for off-grid grids has proven itself in many systems worldwide in recent years. Compared to conventional concepts, it offers a number of advantages in terms of plant planning and construction (design, installation, expandability and compatibility) and at the same time reduces the specific system costs. Especially in the electrification of off-grid, remote areas, it allows the development of a future-proof and flexible power supply. Other projects currently being planned worldwide show how important this new technology is already and will be in the future in the configuration of economically operating stand-alone grid systems. The quality of the power supply in AC-coupled systems is at least equivalent to that in public grids.
